If a child is ill-mannered, you should always look to the parents.

More often than not, children with rotten personalities have either received poor upbringing or downright terrible parenting.

Just take Amir for example. He was not born a psychopath.

From his innocent childhood days, Amir simply grew up based on what he saw and experienced around him.

And looking at Amir now, I could easily surmise the kind of upbringing he had — how harshly he was raised by despicable parents.

Just as expected, he received an abysmal upbringing and grew up to be an absolute mess.

A father who was constantly getting into fights, only to be killed by some mercenary, and a mother who resorted to selling her body at brothels to raise her son alone.

How could a child possibly grow up right in such an environment? It was no wonder Amir turned out to be a complete scoundrel.

So Amir was not at fault here — the blame lied with his parents.

In that sense, the insults directed at Amir were therefore justified—they’re not cursing him, but his despicable parents.

In fact, the wronged Amir should be agreeing with those insults, for they target the real culprits — his lousy parents.

And yet, why…?

“What…..did you just say?”

Amir was radiating a thick aura of murderous intent, as if ready to twist Evan’s neck any moment.

Scratching his head, Evan slowly replied, “I said your mother was awesome. It’s a compliment.”

“…………….”

“Oh, and I almost forgot. I have something for you too.”

Evan rummaged through his pocket and the bystanders looked at the nonchalant Evan as if he were a madman.

Amir just stared at Evan with a fierce gaze.

And soon, Evan pulled something out of his pocket.

“Here it is. Go on, take it.”

“…What is this?”

Wedged between two fingers was a thumb-sized object, resembling a nipple.

What is the point of hiding it, Evan thought, and immediately said what he’d been thinking, “What is it? It’s your mother’s nipple. It must’ve torn off when I sucked on it too hard. But hey, her son Amir is old enough not to need breast-milk anymore, right? There is no need to be too upset.”

For a moment, Amir doubted his own ears; the usually upright Evan, who never cursed, was eloquently doling out a crass insult. It was unbelievable.

Not only that, but what Evan had said before wasn’t just any insult—it was profoundly shocking and thought-provoking.

Regaining his composure, Amir burst out laughing.

“…Puhaha. Have you lost your mind?”

“Huh? Ah right, Amy had inverted nipples, my bad.”

Evan slightly pulled back the embedded thumb and exposing just the nail’s worth, he continued, “There you go, this is Amy’s nipple. The previous one was Luna’s.”

“What the… you bastard!”

Luna was Gael’s older sister, the only blood relative he had left.

“Ahem, well, my son, Amir. You should greet your father if you see him. Why are you just standing there dumbly? Go on, give your new father a proper greeting.”

“Are you really out of your mind?”

“Mad? Tsk tsk. Hey! Even if you’re a bastard, is it okay to curse at your father from the first meeting? Well, well, they say there’s no parent who doesn’t love their child,” Evan added a few words in a stern tone.

Only then could Amir manage to sort out his confusing thoughts.

“Master Evan? Don’t you think you’re taking this joke a bit too far?”

“Master Evan? Haha, look at this kid. He still doesn’t recognize his own father.”

He wanted to tear that loathsome face to shreds, if only he could. He would rip it apart a hundred times over. However, there are many onlookers. Moreover, acting on emotions alone would be playing right into Evan’s trap.

“Look at this crazy bastard!”

“Gael? That’s enough.”

Amir, who knew the underlying situation, quickly pulled the agitated Gael back; then, clearing his throat to swallow his agitation, he spoke to Evan.

“Phew, let’s end the jokes here.”

Yes, Evan must have heard the rumors about Amir’s mother being a prostitute, and was trying to get revenge through these lies.

Amir decided to think that way.

“I have no intention of playing along with your antics, Evan. And you shouldn’t be making such tasteless jokes so casually.”

“It’s not that tasteless. Among the women I’ve seen, she was top-notch.”

At Evan’s sudden crude and offensive joke, Gael could only let out a hollow laugh.

Was this really the Evan he knew?

With that doubt in mind, he stealthily observed Amir.

“…Damn it.”

And a foul curse escaped Amir’s lips. Suppressing his murderous intent as much as he could, he mustered whatever composure remained.

“Evan? I know full well what your intentions are in trying to deceive me with those lies. But enough is enough. This is your final warning.”

“There’s a mole on her left thigh.”

“…What?”

“Amy has a mole on her left thigh, two of them connected in a straight line.”

The implication of this statement was clear and Amir could no longer deny the undeniable evidence.

Immediately afterward, Amir started to reveal his true feelings.

“Gael.”

“…Yeah.”

Swish!

Amir drew a blade from its sheath as he continued.

“I’m afraid I can’t let this slide. Let’s kill him.”

“Heh, figured as much. You managed to hold back remarkably well.”

Gael had been gripping a dagger in his hand for some time now.

Of course, he had no intention of actually killing Evan.

Even though Evan was a discarded child, he was still of noble blood. Killing him would cause nothing but trouble.

So he had planned to just rough him up a bit. And for them, ‘a bit’ meant perhaps tearing off an arm.

At the very least, three fingers would have to go to satisfy him.

“Oh, and Luna had a mole by her navel too. And lately she’s been tying her hair up, probably to hide some love marks on the back of her neck.”

“…Kekeke. You better start praying for your life.”

Now, three fingers wouldn’t be enough. Even at the cost of his life, he would have to tear off both his arms.

Just as Gael was about to lunge at Evan with overt murderous intent,

“Whoa, hold on! Why are you suddenly acting like this?”

Judy and the other party members blocked their path.

Gael forcefully shoved Judy’s shoulder aside to make her way through.

“Kyaah!”

“Fuck off, bitch!”

“What do you think you’re doing? If you lot come at us like this, we won’t just stand by!”

“E-Evan! Hide behind us!”

They didn’t fully understand the situation.

But they knew for certain that Amir and Gael were trying to kill Evan.

“Miss Judy? Would you please step aside while asking nicely?”

“Amir! Calm down first! Let’s resolve this through dialogue!”

“Ugh. Now even they are starting to annoy me.”

From the table in the back, Amir’s gang who had been drinking.

They had now surrounded Evan.

“Master Evan. Care to repeat what you just said?”

“What, that your mother was awesome? Or the inverted nipple thing?”

“……Guess I’ll just have to kill you then.”

Thud.

Amir took a step forward; he deliberately addressed Evan’s party members.

“Would you all mind stepping aside?”

“What, what are you talking about! Evan is our companion!”

“Hmm. Is that so? But in that case, I’m afraid we can’t keep our promise.”

“…………”

Their determination to protect Evan faded at those words.

Those who were ready to fight back just moments ago now hesitated at Amir’s words.

“But that’s not what we agreed on!”

“Y-Yeah! You promised you’d take us in!”

“So can you hurry up and make way for us? I don’t want to break our promise either.”

They didn’t outright leave their spot. But they didn’t engage in battle with Amir’s gang either.

“Hmm~ Poor Evan. It seems your former party members have no intention of protecting you.”

The party-members, frozen like stone statues, showed only the bare minimum of companion-like behavior and Evan only offered a chuckle-laced response.

“They swarm disgustingly. For a moment I thought they were stray dogs I was raising. What, you want me to throw you a bone or something?”

“Hey, do you not understand the situation? There’s no one here to help you. Are you set on dying, or are you just completely out of your mind?”

“Live through what I’ve been through. It’s impossible not to go mad.”

“Ahahaha. Let’s see how far that nonchalance of yours will take you.”

Amir smiled and gestured to his men. The men each gripped their respective weapons.

The situation was about to erupt into violence at any moment. Evan’s companions could only grit their teeth and watch.

“You’re dead meat, you bastard!”

Gael was about to lunge at Evan with his dagger, when suddenly a man kicked the back of his knee, incapacitating him.

And he fell down in an unsightly manner.

“Ugh! You bastards, what the hell!”

“You’re making quite a ruckus while drinking. If you’re planning to cause a riot, why don’t you take it to the underground fighting arena over there.”

“Hah! Gaddel, you want to die too?”

“Kill me? You still can’t grasp the situation, can you? The one who’s about to die isn’t me.”

Gael moved the hand gripping the dagger to threaten Gaddel.

But the latter did not back down. With the same unwavering gaze as before, he stared down Amir and Gael.

“Amir. We’ve been very patient with you, I’m sure you know that.”

“…Haha. Patient? With what, exactly?”

“So what are you planning to do about it? Wanna have a good old brawl?”

Gael gave Amir a meaningful glance – a signal that he was ready to pounce on them at his word.

Meanwhile, Amir shifted his gaze to survey the surroundings.

‘…Shit.’

The people drinking inside had all risen to their feet; their hands were on their weapons, signaling their readiness to join the fight.

‘Could it be that this bastard Evan planned all this?’

Lately, Evan had been meeting with the local mercenaries quite often.

At first, Amir thought nothing of it.

But now it seems Evan had been recruiting the mercenaries in his own way, building up his forces.

“Heh. Figures, nothing’s going my way.”

So that Evan had planned all this, huh?

Amir had thought him a fool, unaware of the ways of the world, but it seems Evan was far more meticulous than that.

“Gilbert might handle it, but can you handle it, Gaddel? You have got at least four mouths to feed, don’t you?”

“When have you ever worried about me? Besides, you should worry about your own situation right now.”

Gaddel spoke and cast his gaze around the surrounding people — about twenty mercenaries, all seasoned veterans.

While Amir’s gang numbered only five, and they were the bottom-feeders in the guild.

“…Tch.”

“We don’t plan to let you cause a ruckus here. If any blood gets spilled in our drinks, it won’t be our responsibility.”

“………………”

Amir weighed his options in his mind.

And soon reached a conclusion.

“Hmm. Then how about we change the venue? Master Evan, care to join us for a bit?”

“I don’t think that’s happening. Evan promised to buy us drinks, you see.”

Gaddel replied, with Gilbert backing him up.

“Mm-hmm. That’s right, isn’t that so, friends?”

The mercenaries all nodded in unison.

Of course, there was no such promise, but the mercenaries wouldn’t turn down free drinks.

“Tch….”

“These bastards have all gone mad!”

“Hey Amir, what are you gonna do?”

Defeated even before the fight began. If battle broke out, the outcome was obvious.

Ultimately, Amir decided to fold.

“…Lost my appetite for drinks.”

“…………..”

“Haha. Guess this isn’t really the time for drinking.”

Amir looked at his subordinates.

His smile was gentle, but somehow, the smile seemed forced.

“…Let’s get out of here, guys.”

“Phew. Yes, sir….”

“Damn those shitty bastards!”

Amir led the way out, with Gael and the others following behind.

“Oh, right.”

Just as he was opening the door to leave, Amir spoke to Evan.

“Be careful on your way home at night. I’m sure you know better than anyone what might happen.”

“Don’t worry, I’m usually in Amy’s arms at night. I have no business wandering around.”

“…We’ll see about that.”

With Gael giving Evan a murderous glare, the commotion finally came to an end.

As their figures disappeared, the atmosphere at the scene calmed down.

“Hmm. We got through that without any bloodshed, that’s good.”

In the ensuing silence, Gaddel spoke up.

“Don’t bother thanking me. I was just thinking of cashing in on some free drinks anyway.”

“I wasn’t going to thank you, and I’m not buying you drinks either.”

Gaddel chuckled lightly, throwing an arm around Evan.

“But you did well, Evan. Didn’t know you had this kind of guts in you.”

“What did I do? I didn’t even get to fight.”

“Haha, look at this guy. Being too modest is just as unsightly. This is the time to be bold and boastful, you know? Especially with those important eyes watching you.”

Gaddel glanced meaningfully at Evan’s party members.

And under Gaddel’s urging gaze, the hesitant women started to move.

“Lovers’ quarrels are all the same. Hope you reconcile soon.”

The perceptive Gaddel stepped aside, letting Evan’s party members take his place.

“E-Evan. Are you okay?”

“What the heck happened here…”

Judy and Chloe each posed a question.

“But is it true? About those disreputable women in the back alleys….”

“Master Evan, that’s not the kind of man you are….”

Irinette and Cecilia also chimed in with a bit of questioning.

At their words, Evan heaved a few sighs, then opened his mouth.

“So, what were you all wanting to say to me?”

They were probably thinking of leaving the party.

If that is what they were considering, Evan would agree without regret.
